Case Study: Glass Containment & Safety Film Installation at Islington Wharf, Manchester

Challenge
The landmark residential development, Islington Wharf in Manchester, experienced spontaneous glass breakage caused by nickel-sulphide inclusions. This posed a serious safety risk to residents and passersby, with the potential for falling glass to cause injury or property damage.

Client Objective
To urgently implement a discreet and effective glass containment system that would enhance safety without compromising the building’s distinctive architectural appeal. Energy reduction and solar control were also identified as secondary objectives for future phases.

Our Solution
Filmtek Data Solutions (FDS) installed FT400 EXT 4mil Clear External Safety Film across the affected elevations, essentially architectural glazing. This was paired with a structural silicone edge retention systems, creating a robust barrier that keeps shattered glass in place, reducing risk of injury or fallout.

Outcome
The Phase 1 installation delivered immediate safety assurance to residents and building managers. The project is now poised for Phase 2, which will extend film application across additional elevations, incorporating solar control and energy reduction features.

Islington Wharf, known for its striking architecture and expansive glass façades, now benefits from an enhanced safety profile—without compromising its visual appeal.
